Abstract [en]

Mathematics is a concept whose meaning is growing in the same speed as society tends to become more technologically. The subject in its own is above all related to school environment, research and development which have placed its practice use in the professional role in the background. To bring back the practice use in the professional role again from where it came, seeing from a historical perspective, I have chosen in this essay to write about the importance of mathematics in professional work life. It is for me a conventional interpretation that students in the upper secondary school tends to loose their interest and motivation in mathematics and in order to turn this negative trend I would like to show how mathematics as a tool and assistance is used by the 21 companies and authorities in the research report. This acceptance is taken from the professional roles last fixed theoretical education at economic- or social science program and also natural science- or technical program at the upper secondary school and from last fixed undergraduate studies as well as research education at university. The purpose of the essay was formulated in four concrete questions and was based on which mathematics that is used in the professional work from fixed theoretical education at the upper secondary school respectively university, if the received knowledge in mathematics from fixed theoretical education at the upper secondary school respectively university is enough for the assignment in professional work, which kind of software that is used in professional work considering fixed theoretical education at the senior high school respectively university to modify and/or present numerical information and also if it is justified to use mathematics that is related to professional work at the upper secondary school to raise students interest in the subject of mathematics. Many obvious tendencies among others that came to the conclusion were that mathematics is a useful tool in all groups of professional roles from their earlier fixed education at upper secondary school or university. There were further a plentiful access to advanced software that support mathematical calculations and visualizations. Mathematics was considered to be in great demand in trade and industry and its wide application in professional work life makes it an excellent way to motivate students for further education in mathematics.
