The study discusses upper secondary school students´ conceptions of sex and gender equity. The basis of the study is the curriculum of the upper secondary school and its goals and guidelines concerning sex and gender equity. In the curriculum there is a contradiction between two perspectives of differences between female and male qualities. These perspectives in the theory of gender depend on the view of biological or social making of male and female. Eight students of an upper secondary school have been interviewed about their conceptions of sex and how they experience the equality between the sexes at school and in the society. The results show that the students clearly have a conform perspective of male and female. They think that male and female are similar, except for physical differences. The differences they comprehend as male or female qualities, they see as social constructions formed by upbringing, culture, and historic and social context. All students in the study but one experience their school as equal, despite of the fact that some of the students attend classes with uneven division of sex among the students. Gender equity is something they find important, and the issues they mention confirm their conception of conformity of male and female qualities.
