Kemi - ett ämne som väljer bort
2001 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this work has been to try to find reasons why so few young people choose to study Chemistry at university. The study was performed in a medium-sized Swedish city. All third year students in upper secondary school, who took Chemistry, participated in the study. An inquiry with both open and multiple-choice questions was used. The main reasons for 31% of the students' decreasing interest in Chemistry during upper secondary school, were that the subject had become difficult and that their teacher had not been able to make them interested. All students asked answered that the role of the teacher in making a subject interesting is very important. Most of them, more than 70%, meant that Chemistry teaching had become more theoretical and 40% meant that the teaching lacked in relating to everyday life.
