2001 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

Background: The last 30 years the look upon function ability at back pain has changed. It is the medical profession´s experience that pain in the back is caused by an injury or degeneation. The last couple of years have been focused on the psychology behind the pain behaviour. It has been found out that the work injuries not always depends on hard work, but the psycho-social work environment means a lot for those being sick-listed for a long time. The individuals ability to handle stress situation is of great importance to avoid illnes. In 1998 the society´s financial costs for back – and neck problems were approx. 65 billion Swedish crowns for those being longterm sick-listed, those being on a disability pension and those being on a temporary disability pension in Sweden. The rehabilitation costs the society a great deal every year. Therefore, it is important to focus on preventive measures. We are daily running into these problems in our work. Therefore, we would like to enter deeply into this subject. Aim: In our study we would like to look at the work at Ryggrehabiliteringen i Värmland (RIV) at the patients point of view. We would like to know how the patients look upon the rehabilitation, what they learned and whether they use their knowledge to handle their back – and neck problems after the rehabilitation. We are interested in the patients situation before, during and after the rehabilitation Method: To gather information, we have used a quantitative method. We have chosen this kind of investigation to get more material to work with. We have distributed questionnaires to one hundred persons in Värmalnd chosen at random, who has participated in RIV the last four years. The external loss was n=40. Result: Half of the participants have answered that they have had problems with their back – and neck for five years or more. In spite of the problems they have not been away ill for more than approx one year before the rehabilitation. During the eight weeks of rehabilitation the patients say that they had more pain for a period. Most of the participants in the investigation say that they can handle their back – and neck problems better and many of them have changed their life-style due to the knowledge received from RIV. This has led to increased motivation for traning on their own.
