Sven Frödin - om sambanden mellan bild och musik så som de kan studeras i Frödins verk
1997 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]

This thesis concerns the work of Sven Frödin, one of Sweden’s major concretists / constructivists of the late twentieth century. In 1968, Frödin executed a painting called The Arrow. The ”arrow” consists of one black form and its inversion. Almost all paintings by Frödin after 1968 are based on this form, which is multiplied, transformed, inverted, reversed, inverted in retrograde, and combined into a rich variety of solitary and serial pictures. The author shows the similarities between Frödin’s practise and the practises of systematic constructivism from the forties onwards. He also shows the analogy between Frödin’s methods of visual composition and the methods of musical composition used in the polyphonic music of Bach, the serial music of Webern and the stochastic music of Xenakis. Following the semiotics of Roman Jakobson, the author through formal analysis links the content of Frödin’s paintings to these methods. He also links the formal analysis to Arnold Schönberg’s concept of the system of presentation.
