The saami drum is a shamanist tool by which the saami shaman, the nåid, travels between different worlds. On the drumhead, figures are painted representing the pre-Christian saami religion as well as their daily life. These figures are not always easy to interpret and there are different theories of their meaning. The seventy-one preserved drums are from the 17th and 18th century and can be classifieded into different styles according to the composition of the drumhead picture. The drum images are an important part of the old saami culture.
