Düsseldorf i Filipstad - om konstnären Christoffer Wallroth
2004 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The artist Christoffer Wallroth (1841-1916) was a landscape painter. He studied at Konstakademien (The Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Stockholm and then in Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf in Germany. His most important professors were Edvard Bergh and Hans Gude. He returned to his hometown Filipstad and became a local painter who preferred to reproduce the nature, waterfalls and mansions of Värmland. He painted in a typical “düsseldorf manner” using the contrast of light and dark sections in his pictures. His works show idyllic and harmonic landscapes with green forests, lakes and pale skies with light clouds. The presence of man is often represented by houses. Wallroth described a passed great era in the history of Swedish iron industry by painting smelting houses, ironworks, the owners’ mansions, etc. There are no up to date motives like factories, chimneys or ironworkers present. He was uneven as an artist, but in his better paintings he is a good representative of Scandinavian nineteenth century artistic quality.
