2005 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

This paper is about the importance of self-help-groups and the member’s experiences about involving themselves in them. I have described four self-help-group members’ views by interviewing them and they’ve described how their lives have changed since they joined a self-help-group. The members themselves are the educationalist to each other in a self-help-group and there are no leaders. The members give each other strength, confidence and support to stimulate themselves to help themselves become independent and stand up for themselves. The non- authoritarian -learning in self-help-groups gives knowledge about how to work with their own barrier in their lives and how each one can change the dissatisfied sides to positive thinking and self-esteem. The hard work of "empowering" each other in the group means giving ideas, sharing information and truly listening to what the person next to you have to say and then trusting them enough to involve them in important decisions of their lives. My conclusion in this paper is that the tools for personal growth, and own social changes is not depending on the leadership. True empowerment--and the only lasting kind--must be brought about by the people themselves.
