The book plays an important role in the early literacy for children. Because of that, it´s also a cornerstone in the work among preschool teachers and others that works in preschools. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the status of children’s books and under which circumstances it works within. The study was conducted as a mail survey containing a self-replying questionnaire to all preschool staff that works in the preschools in one small Swedish municipality. Previous research has underlined the importance for children to come in contact with books very early in life. Also that the pedagogical work with children and books need to be done in a conscious way, not as it usually has been practised – as routine work. The result of this study shows that the different preschools has many different activities that involves books and book related activities in different ways. The most common book related activity among the preschool teachers is reading for children. It also shows that most teachers have a very positive opinion about books and book reading. One weakness identified by the study is the lack of cooperation between preschools and the local libraries. A major conclusion of this study is that most of the preschool staff want to develop their work with books and book related activities, but due to changes in number of children and personal it makes it difficult.
