2004 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: newly graduated nurses, job-satisfaction, professional role, working environment, development.

Abstract [en]

Nurses have great responsibilities working in a demanding work environment where also newly graduated nurses must be able to accomplish their work. Previous studies have shown shortcomings in newly graduated nurses’ professional skills. The aim of this study was to illustrate how newly graduated nurses experience their work, what kind of support they have been given and how work corresponded to their expectations. Data was collected through qualitative interviews with ten newly graduated nurses. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed verbatim. The data analyses was accomplished with phenomenological method. When the nurses describe their experiences of being newly graduated, two sides mirroring the phenomenon appear. This encircling dimension was described as a movement between hope and despair. The nurses experienced both progress and pleasure in their work as well as insecurity, insufficiency and unsatisfaction in a dynamic work. From the result, proposals for development in nursing can be extracted. Above all, the employer can improve the situation of newly graduated nurses i.e. by structured introduction and further professional supervision.
