I have through a literature survey tried to investigate whether culture and communication in international peace processes can bridge ethnic contradictions and thereby create positive peace. This is done through elucidating a selection of communication related factors that I consider to be both interesting and relevant for the matter. The factors are the following; negotiations as conflict solution, intercultural communication, women and men by the negotiation table, diplomatic communication and culture and the mediums as important dialogue creators. I have also chosen to use a case – Chechnya - in order to be able to illustrate the complexity of problems that can follow an ethnic conflict. The aim has in a further sense been to analyze the importance of communication and whether communication can help create peace or not. This resulted in a model where I tried to integrate the different theories of this essay, which are theories about conflict as well as communication and negotiations. The result shows an extensive and complex process where the communication is central and its different functions on international as well as on individual level needs to be noticed. It also shows how communication constitutes the core in peace negotiations and thus also in the peace process. My conclusion is that communication constitutes the basis for human interaction, and by that is the way that both war and peace is created. It is subjective experiences that through interaction create the world as well as the world picture. Through changed narratives of as well individual as ethnic groups and the world, new perceptions of situations, attitudes and behaviours concerning these can be created. The communication's role for the wide peace process are therefore not only central, it is the key.

Jag har genom en litteraturundersökning försökt utreda huruvida kultur och kommunikation vid internationella fredsprocesser kan överbrygga etniska motsättningar och därigenom skapa positiv fred. Detta genom att belysa ett urval av kommunikationsrelaterade faktorer som jag anser vara både intressanta och relevanta för ämnet. Faktorerna är följande; förhandlingar som konfliktlösning, interkulturell kommunikation, kvinnor och män vid förhandlingsbordet, diplomatisk kommunikation samt kultur och media som viktiga dialogskapare. Jag har även valt att använda mig av ett case - Tjetjenienkonflikten - för att främst illustrera den problematik och komplexitet som kan följa en etnisk konflikt. Syftet har i en vidare mening varit att analysera kommunikationens betydelse samt huruvida kommunikation kan skapa fred eller inte. Det har resulterat i en modell där jag försökt integrera de för uppsatsen aktuella teorierna, vilket innebär teorier om såväl konflikt som kommunikation och förhandlingar. Resultatet visar en omfattande och komplex process där kommunikationen hålls central och dess olika funktioner på såväl internationell som individuell nivå uppmärksammas. Den visar hur kommunikationen utgör kärnan i fredsförhandlingar och således även i fredsprocessen. Min slutsats är att kommunikation utgör grunden för mänsklig interaktion, varigenom både krig och fred skapas. Det är subjektiva upplevelser som genom interaktionen skapar såväl värld som världsbild. Genom förändrade skildringar av såväl individ som etniska grupper och världen i stort kan nya perceptioner av situationer, attityder och beteenden gentemot dessa skapas. Kommunikationens roll vid fredsprocesser är därför inte enbart central, den är direkt avgörande.
