The purpose of this report was to investigate the contents in SVT and TV4’s news programs. These were broadcasted between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. during a period of four weeks in November/December 2004. The method used was a quantitative content analysis and there were two questions to be answered: - What are the contents of Rapport and Nyheterna’s TV-news? - Which similarities and differences exist between the news programs? The survey found out, through analysing 56 news programs, that there were many differences between Rapport and Nyheterna, but also many similarities. The biggest differ-ence was that Rapport showed a higher number of news than Nyheterna, but Nyheterna showed more news about economy and politics. The content of the TV-news was dominated by political news, but news about crime and economy was occurred a lot. These issues are called “hard news” and often get more space than other news. “Soft news”, for example social issues, environment and culture competes with each other for the remaining space in the news programs. The global perspective shown in the TV-news is far from the real world. Areas like USA and Western Europe dominated the news, while other parts of the world, like Africa or South America, hardly existed. However, both Rapport and Nyheterna had a mutual view on how large part of a program’s content that was reserved for domestic and international news. About one third of the program’s content was international news and two thirds were domestic news. Keyword Content analysis Broadcasting media News Public Service Television
