Multimediala webbsajter - hur man kan engagera användaren och presentera information
2004 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to study how one uses multimedia on websites to influence the user’s experience. We have focused on how one uses multimedia to engage the user and present information clearly. We have chosen to use theories from various fields, because we’re trying to answer a richly varied question and therefore need a broad theoretical foundation. We have completed a qualitative empirical study concerning how people experience three different websites that incorporates multimedia. For the theoretical portion, we have used litterature from different fields of study such as, Human Computer Interaction, Graphical Design, Educational Psychology, Information Design, and more general literature within the field of multimedia. The empirical study provides the base for the analysis of the websites and a discussion around the theory. Through a broad tackling of the problem, we hope to get a general view over the different aspects that influence the users’ experience websites wich incorporates multimedia. We describe the different elements that multimedia consist of and what needs to be taken into consideration in the use of those elements. Moreover, we describe interactivity and it’s ability to create interest. We have conclueded that an advantage of multimedia is the possibility of interactivity. If the user has the possibility to integrate and influence the content of a presentation, their interest increses and the user receives a richer experience. Interactivity becomes more fun through feedback that is experienced as entertaining. In certain situations it may be suitable to create more complex interactions so that the interactivity experience is more fun. Our study further demonstrates that one intially should not reveal too much information about the sites content, in order to create interest and curiosity for the user.A contributing factor to increase the interest and involvement while navigating a site, is to let the user explore and discover the information by themselves. In order to reinforce interest, one should present information in the form of a story. The information will appear more engaging and the information is placed in context. One of the advantages of multimedia lies within it’s ability to create a virtual environments, and by doing so, create a more vivid story. Keywords:Multimedia,Interactivity,Websites,Macromedia Flash
