The past few months the County Council of Värmland has occurred quite a few times in the media all over Sweden, first and foremost in relation to the scandal with the false doctor in Torsby. At first sight the news can generally be judged as negative publicity, above all since the headlines are negative. At second glance you realize that the news are not as negative as you had first thought. The publicity of the county council is therefore of great interest to investigate and hence with this essay we aim to show how the county council is portrayed in local press during a three months period. There are quite a few newspapers in Värmland, although due to the limits of time we had to set bounds to the two largest newspapers in the region, Nya Wermlands-Tidningen (NWT) and Värmlands Folkblad (VF), which according to our opinion give us a representative selection. The two newspapers even have different political colours. Our purpose also includes an investigation of how the news reporting differs between NWT and VF. To reach a deeper level of knowledge about this phenomenon we have chosen a specific case and studied a few of the articles in both of the newspapers. Which differences and similarities are there in the news reporting in this case? Furthermore we have investigated the number of articles with a direct political connection, while many of the procedures in the county council are consequences of political decisions.Considering our choice of medium, purpose and questions it felt natural to use quantitative as well as qualitative content analysis. The motive for our choice of method lies in theories about news valuing and the conditions of today’s journalism, which affects the editorial work and the selections of events to become news. Our finding shows that the news reporting considerably differs between Nya Wermlands-Tidningen and Värmlands Folkblad, where VF is the newspaper with most negative articles. In NWT the neutral articles are dominating. What the two newspapers have in common is that they frequently use stylistic figures to strengthen the message in the articles. When we investigated the political articles we found that they were not that common, although several of them included interesting choices of words. In the specific case of the false doctor in Torsby we found immense differences between the newspapers, principally seen to the first articles. In the last two articles we investigated the differences are not as apparent, not only is the news reporting equivalent but also it contains very few divergences. However the most important conclusion we have made could be that the journalists at NWT and VF are objective in their news reporting.
