"Här ligger en dopad hund begraven" - en studie av Aftonbladets, Dagens Nyheters och Värmlands Folkblads dopingrelaterade artiklar publicerade 2003

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to, from the perspective of news value, examine what the Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet and Värmlands Folkblad wrote about doping during the year of 2003. We live in a society dominated by mass media where there is a great amount of information but not enough attention. Mass media compete with each other every day trying to get the attention of the audience. Sport is nowadays becoming more and more of an industry and the demands of good accomplishments are increasing every day. Some athletes will do anything to reach the winners’ stand and unfortunately doping is a mean to reach this goal. The survey has been done using a content analysis from a selection of 221 articles from one morning paper, one evening paper and one regional paper. The interpretation of the data was carried through using a code sheet. The result shows that the majority of the articles have a scandalous content. The countries that are appearing in the greatest extent of the articles are the ones that are close to Sweden either by culture or distance. The country that appears most is Sweden. The result also shows that these newspapers in a great extent use people in their articles. The elite and sport at top level get more attention in these newspapers than ordinary people and sport without large sponsors. Our conclusion is that there are hardly any differences between morning- and evening papers when it comes to writing about doping. Because of a too small amount of articles from the regional paper, Värmlands Folkblad, we couldn’t draw any general conclusions of regional newspapers.
