The purpose of this paper is to study the topic crisis communication in relation to the Internet. The aim is to find out its potential as a channel for information when a crisis occurs and also to find out what one can learn from crises communication on the Internet that has been used in crises. This paper is an exploratory literature study where the aim has been to search for literature relevant of the studied topic and from the theories presented be able to get as clear picture as possible considering the premises of this paper. Theories about crisis communication from different perspectives have been presented, as well as theories about Internet as a medium and the possibilities it has given stakeholders to communicate. Furthermore, the importance of a well thought-out website is presented and the importance of issues management and source criticism. The result of this study concludes that the Internet has benefits as a channel for crisis communication because of its possibility to give crisis information to the media and various target groups. But it also concludes that Internet has disadvantages and that it can constitute a threat to organisations because of Internet’s ability to serve as a powerful tool in organizing activist groups. Experiences show that the Internet has successfully been used as a channel in several crises in Sweden. One conclusion is that the importance of Internet as a useful channel for crisis communication is likely to increase in the future. Credibility is thought of as a keyword in successful communication and the conclusion is made that the importance of online issues management is crucial to succeed in anticipating upcoming crises in the information society. The result also concludes that there seems to be a need for cooperation between authorities and organisations in order to clarify where, among the websites, citizens can find crisis information.
