Manligt och kvinnligt i media - en studie av hur svenska dagstidningar annänder stereotyper och könsroller
2003 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The reason for this essay is to get an understanding of how woman and men are portrayed in Swedish newspapers, and how these papers use female and male stereotypes and gender roles. This research is both a qualitative and quantitative analysis of Dagens nyheter and Aftonbladet. Articles and pictures has been counted and analysed, to get a view of how much each newspaper discusses women and men and to find out how stereotypes and gender roles are used in the news supply. The essay starts with an introduction, purpose and statement, method and background, and is followed by the theory- and literature- part witch is the basis of my research. It deals with female, male, stereotypes and gender roles. I have discussed socialization and gender roles, how we are moulded into women and men and the media effect on the gender role socialization. I have described the hegemonic masculinity, which is the dominating view of men that is spread through media and mass cultures. The hegemonic masculinity becomes a kind of ideal that men are supposed to live up to. I have also addressed Yvonne Hirdman´s stereotypical formulas of women and men. Where women today are seen as a mix of an imperfect man and the opposite of a man, that is a lesser sort of a man and one who possesses bad qualities. Hirdman also talk about the “stereotypical gender contract”, which shows an immobility in history that has marked the conditions of the sexes. This stereotypical thinking is enhanced by the media. “Allt är möjligt” is a group that criticise the media and has developed six stereotypes that dominate the medias representation of men and woman. The female stereotypes are: the beauty slave, the housekeeper and the love goddess. And the male stereotypes are: the hard worker, the macho man and the prince charming. “The myth of beauty” is a concept that the scientist and journalist Naomi Wolf has created. She says that it is a way of keeping women subordinate to men in society. The media is spreading an ideal that women are supposed to look up to and to live by. Maria-Pia Boëthius has acknowledged the way how the media rapports crime. It is mostly men who commit violence- and sex- crimes against women. And when this is shown in the media the focus is on the women as victims. The fact that the men has committed the crimes is not shown and analysed in the same way. After the theory- and literature- briefing is the results and analysis shown. I have chosen to show the results through charts and conclusive comments to both the newspapers. The analysis shows that both Dagens nyheter and Aftonbladet supplies gender roles and stereotypes in a similar way. There is an overrepresentation of men in the newspapers and the male stereotypes and gender roles are used to shown that men hold the power, which enhances their superiority in society. Women are underrepresented in the newspapers and shown with stereotypes and gender roles that show their belonging to the private sphere (home and family), to beauty and to them being victims of male violence. It shows women as subordinate to men in society. The newspapers uses both female and male stereotypes and gender roles, which leads to the fact that these patterns in society are kept and enhanced. Women and men are easing lead in to these roles and it is harder to reach an equal society. I conclude the essay with a final discussion where I discuss the results and tie them to the theory.
