This thesis focuses on the topic of internal communication within companies, with the emphasis on the staff magazine and the Intranet. The reason to why I have chosen to put the emphasis on these two communication channels is that I have been given the task to conduct a survey of how the regional staff magazine MITTuppslaget is perceived by its readers. The magazine is aimed at all pharmacy employees in the middle district of Sweden, which consists of Södermanlands, Värmlands and Örebro County. The purpose of the survey have been to determine if the magazine should be published and if so in which form – as a printed magazine or as a web based magazine on the company’s Intranet. MITTuppslaget is expensive to publish and the company therefore wants to find out how their employees value the magazine. It is given out four times a year and each issue are printed in approximately 1000 copies. I have chosen to conduct the survey through a quantitative approach and created a multiple choice based questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to 152 recipients located in eight branches in the three counties. The answer frequency was 69 percent. Apart from the core question, I have been looking at the employees’ standpoint of the content, layout and the frequency at which the magazine is given out. I have also been looking into; to what extent the personnel are reading the magazine, as well as if the geographical and social familiarity is seen as important. The questionnaire is also containing questions about other communication channels such as the note board and informative meetings. The last but not least topic covered is, if there are any linkages between what communication channel is used in relation to the employee category and the age group each employee belongs to. Despite the above, the thesis commence with a presentation of Apoteket AB and the magazine MITTuppslaget. Thereafter follows a description of how different authors in the field divide or categorize internal communication. I have, among other things, chosen to consider how internal and external communication is diverting from each other, the internal communications functions and purpose, as well as its content. As the thesis core question is concerned with communication channels, this topic is also looked at from a more general point of view. The different channels are divided into written, electronically and verbal based communication channels, in which the staff magazine and the Intranet belong to the first two. One chapter is also dealing with advantages and disadvantages of the different communication channels. The result from the questionnaire is, among other things, that the staff meetings are perceived as the most important communication channel. But it should also be mentioned that there are no clear linkages between preferred communication channel and the employee category or the age group each employee belongs to. Further more, staff magazines are read to a large extent and MITTuppslaget is an appreciated communication channel among the company’s employees. As many as 84 percent are reading all or nearly all of each issue and are generally very happy with the content of the magazine. The concluding part of the thesis is formed as a recommendation to the employer about the future of MITTuppslaget. Considering the purpose and the aim as well as the frequency with which the magazine is issued, together with the results from the questionnaire, I believe that the magazine should be published in its printed form in the future as well. Maybe some parts of it could be given out on the Intranet to cut costs.
