2D- eller 3D-illustrationer? - 3D-grafikens påverkan på människor gentemot traditionella 2D-illustrationer
2002 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to study the difference between 2d and 3d illustrations in their effect on the viewer. Does a hand drawn illustration say as much as a detailed 3d model and is it beneficial to keep the amount of detail down to make the illustration easier to understand? This paper examines illustrations of the new area around the university that is being built during the next ten years and how they affect the university students’ attitude and understanding of the resulting environment depending on the type of illustration shown. To test this we collected what planning material was available and constructed a 3d model in AliasWavefront Maya 4.0, using the rendered result from this model and the 2d illustrations from the planning material we constructed a questionnaire and used it to poll a selection of one hundred university students. We also interviewed a few students to get their opinions to complement the data collected in the questionnaire. We found that a 3d illustration can say more than one in 2d and that there is sometimes an advantage to keep the amount of details down to avoid misdirection and confusion without having so few that it's not possible to tell what it's an illustration of. We also found that 3d was experienced to be the more detailed illustration type, but it also seems to be more impersonal and boring than hand drawn illustrations. Key words 2d, 3d, illustrations, image interpretation, image communication, visual communication
