The purpose of this thesis is to examine the appeal that the popular music artist Eminem has for adolescent youth. I am specifically interested in how Eminem relates to the so-called "search for identity" during the adolescent period. My analysis is based primarily on Johan Fornäs' theories concerning power and resistance and what he terms the “disharmony of the spheres.” I have used a qualitative theory of analysis. My conclusion is that Eminem’s popularity among youth is due to the fact that young people can easily identify with the character of Eminem. This is because of his attitude towards and his conflict with parental figures, school and the law.
