Dokusåpan Baren - en studie om programmets popularitet utifrån tittarnas perspektiv
2001 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

Baren is a reality game show, and this genre of television became extremely popular during the 1990´s. Reality shows are supposed to describe reality, which means that ordinary peoples’ weekdays are documented in a form that is similar to a soap opera. Normal people live together and solve different tasks during camera surveillance. The purpose with this essay is to examine why people watch Baren. The question we intend to answer is; what makes Baren so fascinating and tempting? In our essay we also intend to find out if the audience weekday is effected during the period that Baren is televised and in what way. Besides that, we want to know what kind of needs the show satisfies. Our theoretical starting-point is Uses and Gratification-theory, which in short means that people use media to get certain needs fulfilled. We have also studied literature about soaps and reality game shows. To gather data we used focus groups. Our goal is not to generalise our result, it is to get a deeper understanding about viewers thoughts and opinions about Baren. To achieve our goal, focus groups seemed to be the best research method. Ten people participated in our focus groups. Our result shows that the audience have got similar opinions regarding Baren. Many of them watch the show because of the participants’ personalities. The audience want a wide field of personalities, persons who is a bit odd and also personalities they can identify with. The audience is also interested in group relations, they want to see how the participants get along and handle different situations. They think it is exciting to see how the different groups react and act when a participant is voted out of the show. An important need, that is satisfied when the audience watch the show, is their curiosity. Baren gives them an opportunity to have a peep at other people’s life. Many also watch Baren as pure entertainment, relaxation and to make time fly.
