The history of Intranet is short. In the beginning of the nineties, most of us had not even heard the word Intranet. The progress has nevertheless been fast, and today many organizations have their own. Not much literature has been written on this subject, so we have mainly been looking at theory concerning development of an Intranet and how it can be linked to internal communication. Inside Ericsson is a part of Ericssons Intranet and is intended to work as a portal, a starting page. The purpose of this essay is to study how Ericsson employees use Inside Ericsson, to compare this with the purposes of the senders and then analyse how well they agree. A secondary purpose is to investigate whether Inside can affect on the organisational culture. The question of issue is: How do Ericsson employees use Inside and does it agree with the purposes of the sender? The study is a descriptive one. Two earlier studies have been used as a background material. The first, a questionnaire, was an attempt to study the Intranet usage among Ericsson employees from different countries and different Ericsson companies. The other one was a qualitative study made among employees in Stockholm only. These two along with literature studies made us come to the conclusion that a qualitative study could contribute to a deeper understanding of how Ericsson employees use Inside. With this as a background we chose a hermeneutic perspective. We also decided to interview only Swedish Ericsson employees situated in Stockholm. Since we needed to gather data from both sender and receiver we interviewed representatives from both sides. The purpose of the sender was among others that Inside only should contain material that appeals to all Ericsson employees and that it should work as a central source of information. A secondary purpose was to strengthen the organizational culture. The latter was fulfilled in many aspects. The receivers looked upon Inside as a “reference book” where all information is gathered. They also thought that Inside can unite and thereby strengthen the organisational culture. They also use Inside as their starting page. On the other hand, they did not see Inside as a good channel for news. For that purpose, they rather used other channels of information. We can not generalise from our study, but our understanding of how the employees use Inside Ericsson has increased.
