Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine students’ attitudes regarding the concept of health, motivation

for physical activity and to emphasize their opinions about the upcoming health promotion work at

Mariebergsskolan The result of this study aims therefore to be used as an underlying material for the

preparation phase and implementation of health promotion activities for the students in the school.

The study is a qualitative survey with a phenomenography scientific approach, which aims to describe

students’ conceptions, experiences, opinions, beliefs and attitudes. The research was conducted with four

focus groups interviews.

The result of the study showed that the majority of the students possess a positive attitude towards the

health promotion work. Overall the students agree on that self- determination in terms of individual

choses combined with ‘’having fun’’ would be considered as two fundamental parts, explaining why they

would continue being physically active. To increase participation in physical activities students wish to

be more involved and sharing their propositions. Using this strategy would accordingly to several of the

students increase motivation, which could encourage them to participate in activities. Additionally

students’ claims that they prefer performing activities together with other people, since this could lead to

new social interactions.

Furthermore students confirm the importance of being healthy and by being physical active they

emphasise positive effects on their physical and mental health, such as improved endurance and

concentration.

The study indicated that students’ inner motivation is positive correlated with psychological needs and

participation in physical activities. The result also indicated students self-determination are positive

related to inner motivation which lead to positive effects in students’ physical behaviour and well-being.
