: A quantitative study on maladaptive emotional regulation strategies and its relation to anxiety and depressive symptoms in adolescents (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
A quantitative study was conducted with the purpose to investigate the relationship between the maladaptive emotional regulation strategies worry, rumination and suppression and anxiety and depressive symptoms in adolescents. The purpose of the study was also to investigate whether worry, rumination and suppression could explain any variance in anxiety and depressive symptoms in adolescents. The population surveyed was adolescents in the eighth and ninth grade, a total of 2958 adolescents participated in the study. The collected data came from the ongoing project trestadsstudien, which is a longitudinal study in progress from 2014 to 2018, the study has used data collected in spring 2015. The study was partly designed as a correlation design and partly as a regression design. The result showed that there were significant positive correlations between all maladaptive emotional regulation strategies and that there were significant positive correlations between all emotional regulation strategies and anxiety as well as depressive symptoms. Two multiple regressions were then performed with the maladaptive emotional regulation strategies as prediction variables and anxiety as well as depressive symptoms as the dependent variables. The results of the multiple regression analyses demonstrated that all investigated maladaptive emotional strategies were significant predictors for both anxiety and depressive symptoms in adolescents. In summary, the study results that maladaptive emotional regulation strategies have a relation to internalising problems in the form of anxiety as well as depressive symptoms in adolescents and thus may be an area for preventive interventions in this target group.
