Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

National tests in biology were introduced in 2009 in Swedish schools. The aim of the tests is creating an equal basis of grading that is independent of the geographical location of the school. The international studies of PISA show a trend among Swedish students where the knowledge within the natural science subjects has been deteriorating during recent years. This in spite of the fact that national tests and new curriculums have been introduced. To research this and to form an understanding of it four biology teachers in secondary school were interviewed. All the teachers interviewed have had classes taking the national tests. The result of this qualitative study shows that the national tests affect the biology teachers’ teaching methods to some degree. However, they point out that the curriculum has a bigger effect on their teaching. They also say that the students’ interest in biology has not changed since the introduction of the national tests. The teachers have noticed that the number of students that pass the national tests have increased since the introduction of the national tests. Students have become better at connecting different parts within the biology subject and see the bigger picture. Their factual knowledge has decreased however. This view agrees in many aspects with earlier research of the same topic. Because both national tests and new curricula have been implemented since 2009, it is not possible to positively identify which has had the strongest effect.
