Research shows that nature and outdoor environments are decreasing in society today, natural areas have become residential areas or parking spaces. Children's knowledge about animals and nature is inadequate and today children spend a large part of their free time indoors. This means that they get less contact with nature. Knowledge of animals and nature is needed in order to be able to feel empathy and want to preserve the nature that remains. The purpose of this study is to see how educators spend their teaching time outdoors in nature and see if there is any difference in how rural schools and neighborhood schools use the teaching time in outdoor environments. The study has been conducted at two schools, a city school and a rural school. The result shows that teachers feel uncertain about outdoor learning and that they see different obstacles such as time, resource shortage, class sizes, planning, weather and seasons. Finally, the results show that teachers feel unsafe to have an outdoor education, teachers need training and resources to feel safer with outdoor education.
