Nowadays it has become common for organizations to perform their activities in projects. Moreover, organizations affect not only one project at a time but several projects simul-taneously. A multitude of projects starts without any consideration of what consequence it can result on organizations and how difficult it is to run a business with many simultaneously on-going projects. Therefore, we consider that it is relevant for organizations to aim for an over-all control over and management of the projects and their resource demand. The project port-folio as a tool is mentioned as an effective tool that facilitates the management of difficulties in multi-project environment. The purpose of this master study in Industrial Project Management is to describe and explain if the toll project portfolio facilitate the management of difficulties in multi-project environ-ment regarding human resources, project selection and priority between projects. An empirical study of two multi-project environments has been realizated, one organization where they use project portfolio and one organisation where they don’t use the mentioned tool. The two organizations are TietoEnator Telecom Consultants AB and Municipality of Carl-stad. The empirical data was collected through interviews. After this study we can establish the fact that project portfolio facilitate the management of diffi-culties in multi-project environment especially regarding human resources. However, the tool demands continuous communication between decision-makers to make it possible complying it’s function. We discovered that there is a mutual dependence between the tool and the communication while they at the same time presume each other. It showed out that there are obvious problems with the project as a working form in one of the studied organizations. The problems that exist in this organization should be considered if the tool project portfolio will be able to use.
