The software-company performIT gave us the assignment to create a database prototype with object-oriented capabilities, which came to be our primary purpose with this white paper. We came up with a database model together with performIT after numerous meetings. To create the prototype we choose to use an Object-Relational-DataBase-Management-System (ORDBMS). The two reasons why we chose to use an ORDBMS instead of a Relational-DataBase-Management-System are: 1) A traditional relational database would not fulfil the demands that’s been set up by performIT. 2) A pure Object-Oriented database would be too slow searching for a large amount of data. Since the use of ORDBMS is relatively new and is under constant development, we have chosen to describe the underlying reasons for it’s origin and it’s Object-Oriented functions. To describe the history behind ORDBMS and some of its Object–Oriented features is our secondary purpose. Together with performIT we created a conceptual model of the database prototype. The prototype can store, change, fetch, create, and put together information of companies’ products. To be able to implement the prototype on any kind of company we created an universal model. We created a prototype from our model using IBMs database tool DB2 Universal DataBase 6.1.
