Relapse prevention skills: Development of Widmarks Relapse Prevention Scale Version 1 : An explorative study (English)
Abstract [en]

Abstract The lack of measuring instruments for relapse prevention skills and for that reason there is no studies with direct focus regarding to which extent previous course takers has developed their skills after completing the course. Therefore this study aimed to develop and evaluate a new measurement for relapse prevention skills. The study was conducted as a cross sectional design where empirical data was collected through an online survey. The survey was directed to people who had personal experience of alcohol- and drug abuse or addiction. Sixty-one men, woman and intergenders participated in the study where all stated that they had completed a course in relapse prevention answered the survey. Data where analyzed with a principal component analysis (PCA) for an exploratory examination of the new measurements factors and each factor’s reliability. The study resulted in a measuring instrument with three factors who explained 62% of the total variance. Eight statements were reduced due to factorial loadings under 0,50, which lead to a total of 18 statements. The instrument was deemed to have attained good reliability based on Cronbach's alpha values for the respective factors (α= 0,776, α= 0,813, α= 0,749) as well as for the scale as a whole (α=0,856). It was also assessed to have attained good validity. The conclusions are that Widmarks Relapse Prevention Scale Version 1 (WRPS Version 1) makes it possible for further studies within the field and can be used as an objective instrument as a course evaluation. Measuring results based on WRPS Version 1 is considered to provide feedback on how well important skills are achieved and maintained, enabling more accessible care for course participants who have not developed good relapse preventive skills.

Då det saknas mätinstrument som mäter återfallspreventiva färdigheter, saknas idag studier med ett direkt fokus på i vilken grad kursdeltagare har förvärvat färdigheter efter avslutad kurs. Studien utfördes genom en tvärsnittsdesign där empiriska data samlades in genom en webbaserad enkät. Enkäten riktade sig till personer med personlig erfarenhet av alkohol- och drogmissbruk eller beroende. Sextioen män, kvinnor och intergender medverkade i studien och samtliga uppgav att de hade gått kurs i återfallsprevention. Data analyserades med en principal component analysis (PCA) för att explorativt undersöka mätinstrumentets faktorer och faktorernas reliabilitet. Studien resulterade i ett mätinstrument med tre faktorer som sammanlagt förklarade 62% av variansen. Åtta påståenden uteslöts på grund av faktorladdningar under 0,50 vilket resulterade i totalt 18 påståenden. Utifrån påståendena uppskattades faktorernas underliggande psykologiska innebörd vara förberedande, medvetenhet och hantering. Mätinstrumentet bedömdes uppnå god reliabilitet baserat på Cronbachs alfavärden för respektive faktor (α= 0,776, α= 0,813, α= 0,749) och för samtliga skalan i sin helhet (α=0,856). Mätinstrumentet uppskattades även uppnå god validitet. Slutsatsen är att Widmarks Relapse Prevention Scale Version 1 (WRPS Version 1) möjliggör vidare studier inom området och kan användas som en subjektiv kursutvärdering vid uppföljningar. Mätresultat baserade på WRPS Version 1 bör därmed kunna ge återkoppling på hur väl viktiga färdigheter uppnås och bibehålls, vilket möjliggör en mer lättillgänglig vård för kursdeltagare som inte utvecklat goda återfallspreventiva färdigheter.
