"A principal's assignment is quite multifaceted" : A study of principals perception of pedagogical leadership in school development (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the principal’s view of the pedagogical leadership in school development within adult education. My method was based on a phenomenographic approach. This method was used in order to capture the principal’s perceptions of the phenomenon of educational leadership in school development. The interviews were conducted with six principals within adult education from central Sweden. The background of the principals varied regarding the form of the school, age, sex, educational background and professional experience. The heterogeneous selection can further capture the variation of the principal's perceptions.

The results showed that a principal's assignment is multifaceted. The result was focused on different variations in order to highlight the principals' perceptions of the educational leadership in school development. The different variations were seen in: principal's leadership assignments, the pedagogical leadership, school development and the educational leadership roles in school development. These are seen as different dimensions of top-down, and co-operative leadership. The principal's leadership assignment is a top-downed leadership. The principal is who provides the framework based on the guidelines available. Educational leadership, school development and the roles of educational leadership assume co-operative leadership. A co-operative leadership means that the proposals for school development mainly come from the school management, but then there is a dialogue about the proposals with the employees. The result shows some specific perceptions for the principal's educational leadership in school development within adult education. These areas show that the principal works to adapt adult education to the labor market based on the needs of the labor market. The principal makes this with external monitoring. Other roles the principal has is: organizer, entrepreneur, coach and delegator. These roles further highlight the importance the principal plays in school development.
