Oral communication in the classroom : Are teachers doing as research tell them to? (English)
Abstract [en]

This work focuses on oral communication in the classroom. There is limited research about how the oral communication should be assessed and I am curious to find out how teachers think and go about the issue of assessing pupils´ oral communication skills. The data consists of interviews and web questionnaires. My research questions aim to investigate teacher’s thoughts and opinions concerning oral communication in the classroom, what obstacles and opportunities it brings and how they go about to assess it according to the curriculum.

The study is qualitative, Vygotskijs socio-cultural perspective and the idea of the zone of proximal development is used as a theoretical basis. The interviews show that teachers have a similar view of what oral communication is, and that it is as a basic ground in learning, but they differ in how they usually go about to practice it and how it is being assessed.
