Abstract [en]

Tumble dryers of today are divided into energy standards based on how much energy they consume. For reasons of competition the producers want to be in the frontline in the subject of building energy efficient machines.This Master’s thesis aims to decrease the energy consumption of a condensing tumble dryer. The thesis is written at the department of Environmental and Energy systems at Karlstad University.The main objective of the thesis was to raise the condensing tumble dryer from energy standard C to B by investigating which combination of the drying parameters; mass flow, temperature and absolute humidity, that gave the best result regarding the energy efficiency within certain intervals.By constructing two different models of tumble dryers, one open-loop system and one closed loop system with heat recovery, the energy efficiency of the drying process was investigated by variations of the drying parameters. Construction problems caused that it was impossible to control the absolute humidity at the inlet of the drum in the open-loop system. That resulted in measurements on the closed-loop system with heat recovery. A few measurements on the open-loop system were performed in object to determine the heat and mass losses of the systems. The temperature and mass flow of the internal air at the inlet of the drum was controlled in the closed-loop system and the constant external flow of the heat exchanger resulted in various values of the absolute humidity. The measurements were used as basic data in a calculation model which dealt with each component of the tumbler individually. The temperature was found to be the drying parameter which had the greatest influence on the energy efficiency. The results show that the best value of the energy efficiency within the investigated intervals was achieved with increased temperature. The main objective, to raise the condensing tumble dryer from energy standard C to B, was not reached.
