Modelling and control of Opti-Reel
2003 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

An improvement is needed because the Opti-Reel is not always satisfying the control accuracy (±0.2 pli line load) stated by Metso. This report is divided in two parts, constructing and testing a model of the Opti-Reel plus validating different control methods. First, by making a theoretical investigation (a physical model) of the Opti-Reel system. We came to the conclusion that the model should look something like an integrator. We then calculated a more exact model with the System Identification toolbox in Matlab. With a satisfying model we could start simulating the system with different controllers. The following four control strategies are tested and evaluated: * Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) * Pole Placement * Model Predictive Control (MPC) * Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) of the present PID controller. After simulating and evaluating the different control algorithms we came to the final decision that for a future investment on a new controller the MPC is the best choice. If the decision is, not to change controller the IFT scheme can be very useful when tuning PID controllers not only on the Opti-Reel. We think that the simplicity and efficiency of using the IFT can save a lot of time and money on start-ups.
