Mobile positioning - evaluation of technologies, enablers ,formatters and privacy
2001 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

In order to establish the position of a cellular phone, a positioning technique is needed. By using enablers and formatters, location estimation and location based services can be offered. There are several positioning techniques, each with differences in performance and cost. This report evaluates positioning technologies by looking at their performance and their respected advantages and disadvantages. Conclusions are made from different perspectives depending on the quality most valued. The report presents a comparison between different enablers and different formatters. The comparison is made on a structural level, but it does not compare the performance of each enabler and formatter so it is somewhat elementary and on a basic level. Therefor no conclusion could be made from the comparison between them. When the number of location-based services increases the end users integrity and privacy can be violated. This report assesses privacy legislation issues, regarding technologies, enablers and formatters, which will protect the end users privacy. The report also presents any solutions that companies may have implemented in their products to ensure end users privacy.
