The design of efficient mobile radio receivers requires knowledge of statistical parameters of the transmission channel, such as signal-to-noise ratio and Doppler spread, associated with multipath fading. In this work, a spectrum based Doppler spread estimator is proposed and evaluated. The work is conducted in Matlab. The objectives: 1. Estimate the power spectrum of the multipath channel by using a periodogram based method, either Bartlett or Welch and relate the power interval/bandwidth to an estimate of the Doppler spread. The variance of the noise is assumed to be known. 2. Compare the performance of the power spectrum based Doppler spread estimator with covariance based methods. 3. Estimation accuracy of ±10 Hz within 95% confidence interval, for signal-to-noise ratios (SNR’s) between 0 to 15 dB and maximum Doppler frequencies up to 200 Hz. 4. Study the impact of a frequency deviation and a line-of-sight (LOS) parameter on the performance of the evaluated Doppler spread estimator.
