Future and developement - voices from people in Assi, Varanasi India
2005 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

This is a study on C-level in Human Geography that was made in Varanasi, India, the autumn of 2004. The aim with this study was to get knowledge about what aspects the inhabitants in Assi area, Varanasi, have on development and the future. The research questions that were used during the research were: What changes have the people noticed during the last ten years and what are the reasons behind them? What do the people think will change in the next ten years and how do they wish the future to be? What tradition do they think are important to keep in the future? What influences from the “west” have the people noticed and what do they think is good and bad? The approach was empiric explorative. An inductive reasoning was used where the theories came up during the empiric process. The research is based on qualitative data, which consist mostly of the results from 22 interviews. Both men and women, younger and older, people that belong to higher and lower caste, and people with different occupation were chosen to be interviewed. To accomplish the interviews two translators were used. Assi is a very religious area, everyday people are performing their puja and taking holy dips in the Ganga, as people have been doing here for 2000 years. Today a lot of tourists, both domestic and international visit this area. The tourism development has changed Assi in many ways: economic, social, physical and cultural. For example, the tourists need of famous brands and modern facilities lead to globalization. Education is also a main reason behind changes. Development brings modernization along the “western” lines. Despite this, most of the people here are still very traditional and devoted to keep their religious practice. The religion is a huge part of the Indian life and it has a big impact on the whole society. The people in Assi area have different thoughts and wishes about their future life. Some have big dreams and others leave their future in God’s hands. The most common things the respondent thought were negative with the foreigners, who visit Assi area, were that some of them smoke, drink and use drugs. Mostly the respondents said good things about the foreigners, for example, that they are honest, friendly, helpful, punctual and good workers. The tourism gives job opportunities for the people in the area and the economy depends on it. Hopefully the fast development will not result in harm for the area in the future, but that it will continue to be the exciting centre of learning and tradition as it is and has been for thousands of years.
