The English Translation of Pippi Longstocking
2000 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to investigate the English translations of the books about Pippi Longstocking in order to see how well the translations follow the original. My investigation will show that there are many differences between the original and the translations, especially concerning the second book, Pippi Goes on Board. The essay is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the effects of the translations and I will present in which way the style and message of the books have been changed. It seems as if most of the changes have been made in order to normalise Pippi, the language usage and the content in general. One of the problems of translating books is that the work involves two different cultures and languages. There are things that can be difficult to translate, as it may not be understood if it is translated literally. In this case the translator can either adapt it to the culture of the target country or insert an explanation. The second part of this essay deals with such translation problems. I will give examples of problems that occur in the books about Pippi and show how the translators have solved them.
