A Survey of Swedish and British Teachers´ Attitudes to Language Learning
1999 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The aims of this paper was to present some of the findings about factors affecting second language learning. Part of the aim was also to conduct a survey with the intention to find out what attitudes British and Swedish teachers have to language learning. A survey of previous research was carried out which basically showed that it is not possible to say what particular factor is the most important one. The teacher has to make up his/her own mind about what he/she thinks affects language learning and then create a suitable teaching method. A questionnaire was set up, consisting of 36 statements and two open questions, dealing with the language learner, the language teacher and the learning situation. The questionnaire was handed out in Britain and Sweden and 42 teachers participated in the survey. The results of the statements show that teachers from the two countries think it is important that the teacher has good academic skills, and that the teacher is motivated and does his/her best to motivate the pupils. They also agree that it is of importance that the pupil is willing to make mistakes as well as trying to correct his/her mistakes by practising as often as possible But the results also show that there some are cultural differences between British and Swedish teachers. The Swedish teachers were more willing to let the students decide themselves what to study and how to study.
