Patriarchy and it´s effects in Sylvia Plaths The Bell Jar
2004 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate how and by whom patriarchy is reinforced in The Bell Jar, and what impact it has on Esther’s personal development. Apart from examining the imagery and its connection to patriarchy, I discuss the link between Esther’s breakdown and patriarchy. This essay shows that both men and women, except Dr. Nolan, hold patriarchal views and try to change Esther according to these ideas. Even Esther has internalized patriarchal views of women which can be noted in her descriptions of the female characters in the novel. Despite her wish to be seen as an individual she stereotypes other women. Images of babies in jars strengthen the feeling of how trapped Esther perceives that she is in a patriarchal society. Furthermore, the figs on the tree illustrates how restricted her choices are. Esther’s attempt to defy patriarchy leads to alienation and self-destructive behavior. Her reluctance to conform to beliefs she does not hold thus becomes an inward struggle while trying to recover at an asylum.
