Communicative competence - (how) is it taught in Upper Secondary School?

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to see how communicative competence can be taught with a focus on the pragmatic aspects and teachers working in upper secondary school. The study is an examination of the notion of communicative competence in order to see what it means to both researchers as well as teachers. The study is also an investigation consisting of one classroom observation with seven different classes and with five different teachers and one questionnaire study with nine upper secondary teachers in service.The results of the examination show that many researchers agree with Hymes in the definition of communicative competence as the ability to produce and understand utterances appropriate to the context in which they are made. Also, the results of the investigation show that little time is spent on grammar, while English is spoken to a great extent in the classrooms. It seems like most teachers consider communicative competence to be the ability to express themselves in spoken English .My conclusion is that teaching communicative competence will improve the students’ ability to express themselves appropriately in certain situations, which could be intercultural situations. The amount of English spoken in the classroom very much depends on the teacher. If the teacher speaks English most of the time and asks the students to speak English as well, most of the students are willing to do so. However, it also depends on the attitude and motivation of the students, which can be seen in different classes. As there are different methods to teach communicative competence, each teacher has to decide which method works best in his/her classroom. However, it is important to teach communicative competence, as there is more to language than the skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
