The purpose of this study is: q To examine and analyze how the theoretical principles of ecotourism may be operated in a practical manner in the Petén region of Guatemala q To study consequences and effects of tourism in the Petén region q To gain a better understanding of ecotourism, in terms of functioning as a solution for the socio/cultural, economic and ecological sustainable development of the Petén region. The main problem with this study is presented in the question: Is Ecotourism sustainably developed in the area of the study? Ecotourism is on its way to sustainability in the area of the study although it is not yet fully developed. Many problems need to be faced but through persistent continuation of work and cooperation between the local, regional, national and international level, sustainable ecotourism will be achieved. The future is just around the corner: tourists are more interested in visiting a peaceful Guatemala, and communities are seeking a more equitable role in the nation’s economy etc. Three supporting questions are to be used in the research process. These are the following with a few conclusions of the result included: For what purpose is Ecotourism operated in the area of the study? q Increase employment through jobs direct or indirect connected to tourism. q Protection of the nature and culture of Petén for the future. q To utilize an alternative industry to slash-and-burn farming, oil exploration, illegal animal trading etc. How is Ecotourism operated in the area of the study? q Ecotourism in the area of the study is operated through non-profit organizations, local communities, tourism operators, tourists etc. What socio-cultural, economic and ecological impacts does tourism leave in the area of the study? q Improved local employment direct or indirect within the tourism industry. q Local employment direct or indirect connected with tourism such as travel agencies, Spanish schools, transport, plumbers, restaurants etc. q Improved life style through increase of income. q Economic leakages. q Uneven division of tourists in the area. q Lack of tourism management. q Compacted trails within the park. q Positive impacts of tourist protecting the wildlife scaring poachers away by their presence.
