Die internationale Universität - de Perzeption von Austauschstudenten
2005 (Tahitian)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [sv]

Every year about 100 international students come to Karlstad to attend the university. They want to learn new things, make new friends, learn about different cultures and some even learn the Swedish language. But how do they percept the service given at Karlstad University? Are they satisfied? Could the service be better? And how do they choose where to study, i.e. what does the decision-making process look like? These questions formed the purpose of our thesis. Since interviewing all international students would be too time demanding, we decided to make a selection. We interviewed international students both at Karlstad University and at Örebro University in order to compare the two universities and see if there are any differences and if the two could learn from each other. The theories that we found relevant for our thesis were consumer behaviour and its determinants, the service-buying process, service quality, service production, and the difference between the buyer and the seller’s perception of the service. During our interviews we found that the majority of the students, which we interviewed, were very satisfied with the service they got at the two universities. However, it seemed as the students did not seek as much information, as we from the start thought, before they went abroad to study and the information they found most valuable they got from other international students who had personal experience from the different universities/countries. Also the courses and the teachers/professors they found good. However, most of the students wanted a greater selection of courses in English and also more Swedish students attending the English speaking classes. Sometimes they found it hard to get contact with Swedish students and thought that taking classes together might improve the mixture of international and Swedish students, and then also the knowledge of the Swedish culture and the improvement of the English language. Worth to mention is also the positive opinions about the “Faddersystem” that both Karlstad and Örebro University uses. The knowledge of not being completely alone when arriving in a new town and country was seen as very comforting. The conclusion we made was that the students whom we interviewed was satisfied with the service they were given. They were all going to recommend the universities to other students at their home universities thinking about going abroad for a semester. Even though the students seemed overall satisfied with their stay at the two universities we found some things that the university could do to improve their relation to future international students. One thing was to improve the homepage in order for the students to get valuable information directly from the web and from their home country. Also, the catalogue could be sent to the students earlier and would then also serve as an information source. Finally, the differences between the school systems could be explained in order to prepare the students for the studies and what is expected of them.
