Kvinnogymnastiken och damfotbollens framväxt i Värmland och inom två Karlstadsföreningar 1923-97

Abstract [en]

The purpose with this essay is to find out how the female sports, football and gymnastics have been affected by the women liberation and how the society changed their opinion of female sports in Värmland and in Karlstad during 1900. Comparison has also been made on conditions in other parts of Sweden. The study has mainly been done by a study of archives at “Värmlandsarkiv” in Karlstad. The material has been completed with material from clubs and unions. During the second part of 1800 the female sport grew in Sweden, it was mostly aesthetic sports, as gymnastics. Karlstad Gymnastikförening and Värmlands Gymnastikförbund were both started during 1920. The women gymnasts were in minority and it was first during 1940 that they grew stronger both in Karlstad, Värmland and in the rest of Sweden. Since then the gymnastics got more and more dominated by women. As organiser of the gymnastics the women grew stronger during 1960. In connection with the feministic influences the women grew stronger as leaders and in Värmland. During the 70´s they took place in gymnastics committees. Since then the women have had great influence within this sport in Värmland but it was first in the year of 1997 that the women got the majority in the Swedish gymnastic association. It was also in connection with female influences that women football broke through in Värmland and Sweden during the 60´s. The number of women players and teams in Värmland increased considerably through the years up to 1982 when less girls came to the football clubs. There was a period of stagnation in the sport but in the year of 92 the interest for women football woke and the girls returned to football. This was not something typical for Värmland, the same happens in the rest of Sweden as well. Norrstrands IF is a team that started women football 1978 and they have since 1992, except for 1996 always managed to have a women team playing. Women in management positions are not common. There was a woman in the committee of Norrstrands IF during 1984-1988, but after that it took to 1997 before there was a new woman member in the committee. It was the same year a woman first got elected to the Football Association of Värmland. The Football Association of Sweden had a woman elected in 1992. The changes in female sports depend on the influences in society. The women gymnastics came from the feminist movements that were in the end of 1800 and beginning of 1900. Feministic movements during the 60´s made it possible for women to take place in the committees of Karlstad Gymnastigförening and Värmlands Gymnastikförbund. The equality between the sexes has made the women accepted as members and also an opportunity to get different assignments in different football associations.
