Medmänniskor eller parasiter - synen på de fattiga i Ölme härads socken 1810-59
2001 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

The intention with this essay is to research which attitudes the society had to the poor people in Ölme parish 1810-59. It´s also an attempt at maps the reasons, which caused this attitude and compare it with the laws and the theoretical perspectives of Anna-Maria Skoglund and Birgit Peterson. Their ideas are that the lower class was seen upon as dangerous and immoral. The poor adults, who couldn’t relate their bad situation to accepted reasons as old age and sickness, were not worthy to receive assistance from the society. As a background will the poverty legislation before and for the actual period be treated. Except that, it gives information about the systems of assistance in the parishes, especially how it was in Ölme. The discussion of the care of the poor is an other question in this chapter. The research shows the questions about how the poor was classified, and which ones who received or not received assistance. It is also presented what kind of assistance, which was given, and the occurrence of disparaging words and names for the ones who applied for assistance. The status of the members of the poverty committee compares both to each other and in relation to the poor are researched too._x000B_The study shows that the lower class in Ölme was divided into two different groups, the worthy and the unworthy. It´s clear that the unworthy was looked upon as a threat against the established society. The care of the poor followed in particular the legislation. A poverty care was early founded in the parish, because of that there was no need to change the organisation when the new laws came.
