Med färgerna som soundtrack - en analys av färgernas beteende i Suspiria
2003 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]

This papers deals with the use of colours in Dario Argento’s 1977 horror classic Suspiria. The focus in mainly aimed on the use of colours as something outside the movies own reality, something that isn’t really there but merely applied as an amplifier for me as a viewer. Argento uses the colours to set the “mood” and lead the viewer through the scenes, in many ways similar to the use of sounds and music. The analysis consists of three scenes from Suspiria and one scene from its follow-up Inferno. The scene from Inferno is added to se if there is any resemblance in the use of colours by Argento in other movies and if it’s possible to establish a type of scheme. Every scene is analyzed in the following way; what colours appear, in with consistency they appear, what kind of signals do they send to me as a viewer and how do they affect the plot. By doing this I wish to show a visible scheme of colours and how they are used in the same matter as sound. In my conclusion I point out that there actually is a scheme and its being used in a way to build up the atmosphere of the scene from a calm and passive state to a furious and intense crescendo. I also establish that the colours are used in the same way as sound to lead the viewers attention and as music to set the mood.
