Tron på det oförklarliga. En studie i hur man gestaltar människors tro i film. Helena Magnusson C uppsats 1999-12-30 Institutionen för Kultur och kommunikation Karlstad Universitet The belief of the mysterious A study of how films create the human faith. The subject of this essay is to study how human’s faith in something mysterious are created in fairly recent films. I have chosen films that concentrate in how the believers live with their faith. The two main faiths are Christian faith and the belief of the existence of UFOs. But the faith of spirits and a magic room is also brought up. The aim of this essay is to get a picture of how films portray a strong believer’s faith and life. But also how films show the mysterious it self, without showing it in the picture. I will study why some human beings have a strong belief of something they can’t prove, what they base their opinion and belief on, how this faith influence on their lives, what sceptics think and what kind of humans the believers are. The arguments are primarily based on theories from Freud, Sartre and Marx. The analysis will show that there is a big difference on how Christians and UFO-believers are portrayed. It’s bad believing in God and good in UFOs. When showing the essence of the mysterious the films essentially use light and sound. The humans all need their faith when they feel lonely and excluded and need some meaning of their lives. The oral tradition is the main cause behind the character’s faith. If the believers feel an inner call for the mysterious and if there are more people sharing the same belief, the characters faith do increase. The faith becomes the character’s opium, they risk their lives for their belief. There are always a couple of sceptics in each film and their job is to keep the story going and make it interesting. The believers are independent and brave individuals. Keywords: faith, mysterious, UFO, God, humans
