As its title indicates, this essay examines how the central character Elena Rincón goes through a process of transformation, liberating herself from her old existence in a failed marriage. It does so by employing an analytical model suggested by Greimas and developed by Ubersfeld, where underlying forces influencing the characters are identified and traced throughout the text. These are called actants, and among them are for example ‘Subject’ (Elena, in this case) and ‘Object’ (her liberation). To capture the process of change, three different models are identified and accounted for in this essay, each with Elena as its subject but with different agents acting as catalysts for change and varying factors opposing it, in accordance with the story’s unfolding.
