This examination analyses the relative new trend when building contractors import building materials to lower the purchasing costs. The competition among wholesale dealers and manufacturers in Sweden are as low that the prices on building materials has increased considerably more than the other consumer prices. The high prices on building materials also depend on the links between manufacturer and building constructor. Building materials are included in the contract cost with 41 % and there is money to save by using the international market where prices on building materials can be the half as expensive as in Sweden. The examination describes more in detail how the purchases are made and what the literature and media say about this subject and also what the building contractors should pay attention to when purchasing from abroad. The fundamental purpose with the examination is to analyze how building contractors proceed when they buy foreign building material and also why this business has become more usual. Other purposes is to find out which obstacles that building contractors can come across when importing and how they are going to solve them and also which earnings building contractors count on. To get answers on the purposes interviews where accomplished with three persons from the biggest building contractors in Sweden. These persons work only with purchases from abroad. Interviews with buyer and manufacturers where also accomplished to get there opinions about building contractors purchasing building material from abroad. Why building contractors purchase from abroad is first to buy cheaper but also to create more competition on the Swedish market. In a line of business like the construction industry where the profit margin is low there is one way to increase profitability for the building contractors and that is to lower the costs. From our interviews we have get to know that the building contractors endeavour to keep high purchasing volumes from as few deliverers as possible, to lower the prices on building materials. Common for the three building contractors who where interviewed is that they have employees abroad searching for new deliverers and make purchases. Building contractors can also adopt an own standard which the buyer can choose from, to minimize the quantity of varieties of similar type of building materials. The problem with this is that the buyer’s option can be limited. Some of the respondents where agreed with that a european standard would increase the competition on the swedish market. The building contractors have so far only bought building material from abroad to single projects and therefore have not been needed to take care of logistic and stocks. The respondents on the building contractors see no different in the highest quality between swedish and foreign building materials, however the lowest quality can be poorer for the foreign building materials. If you don’t have high requirements in quality you can find cheaper solutions abroad. The building contractors were most worried for delays would arise in manufacturing and not in delivery. In the future the building contractors want it equally natural to buy building material from aboard as it is to buy from Sweden today. This examination fulfills the purposes that we wanted answer for but there is possibilities to further develop this work to study whether it is the building contractors or the buyer who earns on the building contractors import.
