Finding one’s role as a therapist : A qualitative study on the experience as a Master student in Psychology and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

A qualitative interview-based study was carried out on 10 student therapists undergoing a master’s degree which included basic psychotherapy practice in cognitive behavioural psychology. The study aim was to investigate the experiences of the student therapist in the attempt to find the therapy role. The method used was Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The result showed five themes with a total of six sub themes. The first sub theme was The therapeutic personality, followed by Living up to the therapeutic role with the sub themes The ideal therapist; Performance anxiety and performance based self- esteem and Insecurity and the fear of making mistakes. The last main theme was Problems and possibilities during a therapy education with the sub themes Being one’s own therapist; Therapy supervision and the supervisory role and Structure that helps and prevents. The themes addressed the student therapists ideas of a therapeutic ideal to relate to and the perception of a congenital therapeutic personality. The students experienced performance anxiety related to fear of making mistakes. The participants experienced a heightened self- awareness and perceived structure in the therapy session to be a reassuring strategy but also a hindrance when it comes to flexibility. The importance of supervision and the supervisory role also emerged in the study. The study shows that there are areas within student therapy experiences which need to be highlighted.
