The aim of this qualitative study was to research how social workers at a specific work place experience their work situation and what strategies they use to cope with these experiences. The study is based on interviews with eight social workers. The interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide in order to allow follow up questions. The interviews were then transcribed and the coding of the material was inspired by grounded theory. The material was then analyzed using the demand- control- support model and the concept of organizational anorexia. The results show that the social workers experience a stressful work situation with high demands from the employer and low control over their work situation. The results also show that they are able to manage their work situation because of the high support they receive from their colleagues. The conclusion of the study is that these social workers are, to a great extent, dependent on the high support from their colleagues and the opportunity to control their own schedule in order to cope with their high demand work situation.
